It's no secret that as a sustainable fashion brand with a focus on resort wear that we have a deep love of the ocean and the coast lifestyle of Queensland. So it's only fitting to write a journal post about the ocean. Living in a country that is surround by ocean, seven different seas to be exact it is something that as a nation we very much seem to take for granted. The ocean is one of the most important resources on our planet. It over 70% of the Earth's surface and is a vital component of our environment, economy, and society. But do you really know why the ocean is a real benefit to us, the human race. Let's explore some of the benefits of the ocean and why it is so important for our planet.

  • Climate Regulation: The ocean plays a critical role in regulating the Earth's climate. It absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which helps to mitigate the effects of climate change. Additionally, the ocean's currents and temperature gradients help to distribute heat around the globe, regulating the Earth's climate and weather patterns.
  • Biodiversity: With 80% of the ocean being unexplored what we do know is that the ocean has a diverse array of plant and animal life. From microscopic plankton to massive whales, the ocean is teeming with life. Many of these species are essential to the Earth's ecosystem and provide important services, such as oxygen production, carbon storage, and food production.

  • Economic Benefits: The ocean also provides a range of economic benefits, including tourism, shipping, and oil and gas production. Coastal tourism, for example, generates billions of dollars in revenue each year and supports millions of jobs. Shipping is also a critical industry, with over 90% of the world's trade transported by sea.
  • Health and Well-Being: I feel like this is a little secret gem that all people living by the coastal knows. The ocean also provides a range of health and well-being benefits. Spending time near the ocean has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve overall mental health. Additionally, the ocean provides opportunities for physical activity, such as swimming, surfing, coastal hikes and trails which can help to promote physical health and fitness.

Despite the many benefits of the ocean, it is facing a range of threats, including pollution, overfishing, and climate change. It is up to all of us to take action to protect this valuable resource for future generations. By reducing our use of single-use plastics, supporting sustainable fishing practices, and reducing our carbon footprint, we can help to ensure that the ocean continues to provide these critical benefits for years to come.
